ADVANTAGES TO MOUSE WITH THE OTHER HAND

CM Lim - June 22, 2017.

I started to mouse on a desktop computer with my "other hand" which is the - Left - before turning to 50, it wasn't a wishful decision but a real crying need to adapt.

I use a computer mouse with my natural right hand all my life, but that changed about 4 years ago when I started to feel ache and hollowness in my right elbow whenever I use the mouse, the aching was most acutely felt when I aim and click, it aggravated overtime and until such time when I could no longer bear and had no choice but to bring the mouse to my untrained "Left hand" to take over the task of mousing around.

CHANGE HAND

It took a lot of getting used to, picking up again an unfamiliar motor skill in pushing, sliding and clicking. At the end glad that that change turned out to be a blessing to also realized I should have done it earlier, to mouse with my other hand. Why?

ADVANTAGES

Apart from relieving the ache in my right hand, I found other advantages which wouldn't have known if it hasn't been for the switched.

1. Flexible
I can mouse with either hand when it's called for like when space is dirty, uneven, crammed, wet and so on, super flexibility!

2. Numeric Input
Numeric Pad standard design is on the right side of the keyboard, so with left-hand mousing, right hand on numeric pad, it becomes a delightful disposition to adopt when working with a spreadsheet or the likes where inputs are predominantly numeric.

3. Writing
By using the mouse on the left-hand frees my right hand to do other things, especially to just write, I'm a right-handed, I don't have to put down or pick up my mouse for a pen anymore. left-hand mouse, right-hand pen works seamlessly.

If you are trying your other hand on mousing inspired by this article, there is one point to take note though, buttons itself should not be switched for the change of hand in case someone else needs to use the mouse, just bring the mouse over.
